Sacred Mantra for Meditation: Om Hrim
This mantra was specially selected by Sri Swami Satchidananda as an ideal mantra for meditation. It is a bija or seed mantra which brings out the universal vibration because it contains the entire cosmos in its essential form. Many mantras include OM. In the beginning, God, or the Cosmic Consciousness, expressed as the Word or as vibration. That vibration produced a hum which gave rise to the syllable OM.
Hrim is considered one of the most important of all mantras. It is said that meditation on this seed sound will lift the veil of maya (illusion) and will give the meditator a glimpse of the universe as it is. Hrim is a mantra of purification and inner transformation. By meditating on this inner vibration you become tuned to the cosmic sound. You will also attune to the material and spiritual success, well-being and auspiciousness that this mantra reveals through one-pointed repetition and meditation.
Sri Swami Satchidananda, one of the first Yoga Masters to bring the classical Yoga tradition to the West, is well-known for his combination of practical wisdom and spiritual insight. He dedicated his life to the service of humanity, demonstrating by his own example the means of finding abiding peace.
